Claude Code and Codex limits,
at a glance.
Claude and ChatGPT plans limit how much Claude Code and Codex can do in five hours and in a week. Each agent can tell you where you are. Gnista keeps both in view, from the agents’ own data, on your Mac.
Updated
In the agents themselves
- Claude Code: type
/usageto see your plan’s current session and weekly limits. - Codex: type
/statusto see your 5-hour and weekly limits. - Both answer when you ask, in that session’s terminal.
With Gnista
- In Settings ▸ General, set Usage to Plan limits, or to Both to see what each session costs too.
- Codex: nothing more to do. Gnista reads the limits Codex writes into its own session files.
- Claude Code: nothing more to do. Claude Code only shares its limits with its status line, so Gnista joins it: with no status line, it adds one that prints nothing; with yours, it wraps it, and yours keeps working as before. To keep your status line to yourself, turn it off under Claude Code in Settings ▸ Agents.
- Your limits show under your sessions, side by side: each agent’s icon, then a ring for each window, such as “◔ 5h 16%”. A window turns amber at 80% and red when it’s used up, and then says when it resets. Hover for the rest.
How it works
- No sign-in, no Keychain, no usage endpoint: the numbers come from the agents’ own files and status line, on your Mac.
- They update when an agent runs. Once a window has reset, the old numbers turn grey, marked with the time they’re from.
- Each session’s row has a ring for how full its context is, with any Usage setting but Off: amber at 80%, red when full. Hover for its tokens.
- Set Usage to Off, turn the status line off in Settings ▸ Agents, or disconnect Claude Code, and your status line goes back exactly as it was.
- Copilot shows its premium requests. Gemini CLI’s files carry no quota, so it shows none.
- Cost, if you want it: each session priced at its model maker’s list prices, from LiteLLM’s public price list, fetched at most once a day.
Without Gnista
/usage and /status are free and exact, but only in the session you ask. Community tools such as ccusage estimate cost from Claude Code’s local logs, in the terminal.
