Aider,
in your notch.
Aider notifications and cost on your Mac
Gnista shows every Aider session in your MacBook’s notch: working or done, your prompt, its reply, the model and what it cost. Aider has no hooks, so there’s nothing to install: Gnista sees it by its process. One click takes you to its tab.
Gnista with Aider, at a glance.
- Where it runs
- Aider (
aider) in any terminal. - Setup

- Needs you
- No: Aider asks in its own terminal, which nothing outside sees.
- Answer from the notch
- No: a click takes you to its tab to answer.
- Reply from the notch
- Typed into its terminal: Terminal, iTerm, Ghostty, or an editor’s terminal with Gnista’s extension.
- In the row
- Your prompt, Aider’s reply and the model, read from its chat history.
- Subagents
- No: Aider has none.
- Cost and limits
- The cost and tokens Aider reports after each reply; no plan limits.
No hooks, no setup.
Aider has no hooks, so Gnista watches for its process: working while it’s busy, done once it goes quiet, gone when it exits. A click takes you to its tab.
Read from its chat history.
Aider writes every prompt and reply to .aider.chat.history.md, with the model and, after each reply, the tokens and cost. Gnista reads it, so the row shows what you asked, what Aider said and what it cost.
What it can’t do with Aider, and why.
- “Needs you”: Aider asks in its own terminal, which no hook or file says, so a waiting Aider shows as done once it goes quiet.
- Answering from the notch: for the same reason, you answer in Aider.
- Working and done come from watching its process, so a turn is called done only after a quiet moment.
- Replies from the notch are typed into its terminal, so in Terminal, iTerm, Ghostty or an editor’s terminal with Gnista’s extension, not in a tmux pane.
Connected in a minute.
- Install nothing: Gnista finds Aider by its process, with Settings ▸ Agents ▸ Detect agents without hooks on, as it is to begin with.

Aider, asked and answered.
Do I need to set anything up?
No. Gnista finds Aider by its process, with Settings ▸ Agents ▸ Detect agents without hooks on, as it is to begin with.
Why doesn’t Gnista show when Aider needs me?
Aider asks in its own terminal, and nothing outside it can tell. Gnista shows working while it’s busy and done once it goes quiet.
Where does the cost come from?
From Aider itself: after each reply it writes the tokens and cost to its chat history, and Gnista reads them there.
I moved the chat history with --chat-history-file. Does it still work?
--chat-history-file. Does it still work?Yes. Gnista reads the file the flag names, from the folder Aider runs in.
